ELOUNDA

Ką veikti Elundoje

Elounda is the quiet, expensive end of eastern Crete - a sheltered bay, a village square that still functions as one, and the island of Spinalonga sitting a few hundred metres offshore.

It is ten minutes from Agios Nikolaos and works either as a base or as a half-day trip with lunch.

The essentials

  • Spinalonga - the Venetian fortress and former leper colony. Boats leave from Elounda harbour and from Plaka, which is the shorter hop.
  • Plaka - a former fishing hamlet opposite the island, now the best place here for a seafood lunch.
  • Olous - the sunken ancient city; you can see walls under the water beside the causeway, and there is a mosaic floor nearby.
  • The windmills and the salt pans along the causeway to the Kolokytha peninsula.

Swimming around Elounda

The bay is shallow, warm and almost always calm, which makes it very good with small children and poor for waves. For clearer water, walk or drive out onto the Kolokytha peninsula, where there are small unorganised coves and a chapel at the end.

Combining Elounda with the rest of the east

  • Elounda plus Spinalonga plus Plaka lunch - a comfortable full day.
  • Add Agios Nikolaos in the evening for the lake and dinner.
  • Kritsa and the Lato site inland, 30 minutes, for a morning before the boat.

Practicalities

The road from Agios Nikolaos climbs and then drops into the bay, with a viewpoint halfway that is worth stopping at. Parking in Elounda village is tight in the middle of the day; Plaka is easier. We deliver rental cars to Elounda hotels free of charge.
