What determines the price of a rental car in Crete
Season - July and August cost the most; May, June, September and October cost noticeably less.
Rental duration - the daily rate falls the longer you keep the car, and rentals of seven days or more get the best rate.
Car category - a city car, a family car and a seven-seater are three different price levels.
Transmission - automatics are scarcer on the island and priced accordingly.
Pickup location and time - airport, port or hotel delivery in the Heraklion area is free; late-night handovers in remote areas may not be.
Extras - child seats and an additional driver each carry a small extra fee.
Availability - in high season the price follows what is genuinely left on the island.

A €9-a-day headline rate is rarely what you pay. Once a chain adds mandatory insurance to reduce a €900 excess, a card deposit, an airport surcharge, an additional-driver fee and a child seat, the same week can double.
