What public transport covers

• The north coast line between Chania, Rethymno, Heraklion, Hersonissos, Malia and Agios Nikolaos runs frequently all day.
• Town buses in Heraklion and Chania, including Knossos and the airports.
• Some south coast connections (Chora Sfakion, Plakias, Matala) run once or twice a day - fine for a planned trip, not for improvising.
• Mountain villages and small beaches usually have no service, or one bus in the early morning.

Bases that work well car-free

• Chania - old town, beaches, buses to Elafonissi and the gorges, boat connections along the south-west coast.
• Rethymno - beach in walking distance, walkable old town, buses both ways along the coast.
• Agios Nikolaos - lake, town beaches, boats to Spinalonga and buses to Elounda.
• Hersonissos - beach, restaurants, waterparks and frequent buses to Heraklion and Malia.

Where excursions fill the gap

Organised day trips exist precisely for the places buses do not reach: Balos and Gramvousa by boat, Spinalonga, jeep safaris into the mountains, Santorini by ferry. If you are car-free, one or two excursions will cover the highlights you would otherwise miss entirely.

When one rental day is worth it

The most efficient compromise we suggest to guests: stay car-free for most of the week and take a car for one or two days to do the inland loop - villages, gorges, a beach with no bus stop. We deliver to your hotel and collect from it, so you never have to reach a rental desk.
