HERSONISSOS

Mitä tehdä Hersonissoksessa

Hersonissos is the busiest resort in central Crete and, for a first trip, one of the most practical bases: 25 minutes from Heraklion airport, on the national road, with everything from waterparks to quiet mountain villages inside an hour.

The strip along the harbour is what most people see. The village above it, and the coast either side, are what make a week here worth it.

In and around town

  • The old harbour - the sunken Roman fish tanks and the small church are at the far end, past the bars.
  • Koutouloufari and Piskopiano - the two hill villages above the resort, five minutes up, with the best evening tavernas in the area.
  • Star Beach and the town beaches - organised, shallow and busy; fine with children, less so if you want quiet.
  • Analipsi and Anissaras - a short drive east and west for calmer sand.

Day trips that work from Hersonissos

  • Agios Nikolaos and Elounda - one hour east, easily a half day, or a full day if you add the Spinalonga boat.
  • Lasithi plateau - 50 minutes up into the mountains, cool even in August.
  • Knossos and Heraklion - 25 minutes west; do the palace first, museum after lunch.
  • Matala - 1h30 south across the island, best as a full day.
  • Chania - 2h30 each way on the national road. Doable, but better as an overnight.

With children

Hersonissos is the easiest part of Crete to travel with kids: the waterpark and Amazonas Park are both within a short drive, the town beaches shelve gently, and almost every taverna has high chairs and an early-evening kitchen. Child seats are available with every rental car for a small extra fee, and we fit them before handover.

Getting around

Buses along the north coast to Heraklion, Malia and Agios Nikolaos are frequent and cheap, so you can manage without a car if you plan to stay on the coast. Everything inland - the plateau, the villages, the gorges - needs your own wheels. We deliver to hotels and apartments in Hersonissos free of charge.

Usein kysytyt kysymykset

Is Hersonissos a good base for exploring Crete?
For central and eastern Crete, yes - Heraklion, Knossos, Lasithi, Agios Nikolaos and Elounda are all within an hour. For the west (Chania, Balos, Samaria) it is a long way; consider splitting your stay.
What can you do in Hersonissos in the evening?
The harbour front is the loud option. For a quiet dinner, drive or walk up to Koutouloufari and Piskopiano - traditional tavernas, views over the bay, and a completely different atmosphere ten minutes from the strip.
Which excursions leave from Hersonissos?
Most Crete excursions pick up here: Spinalonga and Elounda boat trips, jeep safaris into the mountains, the Dia island boat trip out of Heraklion, and the Santorini day trip via the Heraklion ferry.
Do you need a car in Hersonissos?
Not to reach the beach or a restaurant. Yes, if you want the Lasithi plateau, the south coast, mountain villages or beaches without sunbed rows.
