AGIOS NIKOLAOS

Que faire a Agios Nikolaos

Agios Nikolaos is built around a small round lake that opens into the sea, and that lake is the whole character of the town: cafés on three sides, fishing boats on the fourth, and the Mirabello gulf beyond.

It is the natural base for eastern Crete, and an easy hour from Heraklion airport on the national road.

In town

  • Lake Voulismeni - walk the ring at dusk; the cafés on the shaded side are the better ones.
  • Kitroplateia and Ammos - two small town beaches within walking distance of the centre.
  • The Archaeological Museum and the harbour promenade.
  • The Saturday market on the seafront road - produce, cheese and herbs.

Day trips east

  • Elounda and Spinalonga - the boat leaves from Agios Nikolaos, Elounda or Plaka; Plaka is the shortest crossing.
  • Kritsa and Lato - a hill village and a Doric city site, 20 minutes inland.
  • Mochlos - a tiny fishing village for a long lunch, about 45 minutes east.
  • Vai and Sitia - the palm beach and the far east, a full day with early start.

Beaches around the Mirabello gulf

Almyros, just south of town, is the biggest sandy stretch nearby and has shade. Havania and Ammoudara are small coves within a few minutes' drive. For clear water with fewer people, keep driving toward Istron and Kalo Chorio.

Getting around

The town centre is walkable and parking is easiest along the seafront north of the lake or in the paid areas above the centre. Buses run along the north coast; anything inland or east of Sitia needs a car. We deliver free of charge in the Agios Nikolaos and Elounda area.

Yes - it is the most attractive town in eastern Crete, and the only base from which Spinalonga, Elounda, Kritsa and the Mirabello beaches are all short trips.
How do you get to Spinalonga from Agios Nikolaos?
By boat. Departures run from Agios Nikolaos harbour, from Elounda and from Plaka - Plaka is the shortest and cheapest crossing if you have a car.
How far is Agios Nikolaos from Heraklion airport?
About 65 km, roughly an hour on the national road, almost all of it dual carriageway.
Are there beaches in Agios Nikolaos itself?
Two small ones in town, Kitroplateia and Ammos, plus Almyros a couple of minutes south, which is the one to choose with children.
