Co robić na Krecie

Crete is 260 km long. That single fact decides most of your holiday: what is worth doing depends far more on where you are staying than on any top-ten list. A day trip that is relaxed from Hersonissos is a five-hour round trip from Chania.

This page is sorted the way we actually advise guests - by region and by driving time - so you can build days that leave you time to swim rather than time in the car.

Central Crete: Heraklion, Hersonissos, Malia

  • Knossos Palace - the Minoan site everyone comes for. Go at opening time; by 11:00 the coach groups arrive.
  • Heraklion Archaeological Museum - the finds from Knossos are here, not at the site. The two together make one full day.
  • Lasithi plateau - a mountain circuit of windmill frames, apple orchards and the Diktaean cave.
  • Matala and the south coast - the caves, the sunset and a long lunch, about 1h15 each way.
  • Dia island - a short boat trip out of Heraklion for swimming in bays with no road access.

Eastern Crete: Agios Nikolaos, Elounda, Sitia

  • Spinalonga - the former leper colony island, reached by boat from Elounda or Plaka.
  • Agios Nikolaos - Lake Voulismeni, the harbour tavernas and the best evening stroll in the east.
  • Vai palm forest - the largest natural palm grove in Europe, and a proper drive to get there.
  • Mochlos and Milatos - small fishing villages where lunch still takes two hours.

Western Crete: Rethymno, Chania, the south-west

  • Chania old town and the Venetian harbour - best in the evening, once the day trippers leave.
  • Samaria gorge - a full day, one direction, ending with a ferry. Not a casual walk.
  • Balos and Elafonissi - the postcard lagoons. Balos is reached by boat from Kissamos; the gravel track is off-limits to rental cars and voids insurance.
  • Rethymno old town - the smallest and least changed of the three Venetian towns.

How to plan your days

A workable rhythm for a week is: two full-day drives, two half-day trips, one boat excursion and two days that never leave your beach. Anything denser and Crete stops being a holiday. Distances on the north coast national road are fast; anything crossing the mountains to the south coast takes far longer than the map suggests, so add a third to every estimate.

How many days do you need in Crete?
Seven nights lets you see one half of the island properly. Ten to fourteen lets you combine east and west without repacking every second day. For a short stay, pick one base and drive out from it.
Do you need a car to see Crete?
For the resort strip and organised excursions, no. For mountain villages, small beaches and anything on your own schedule, yes - buses connect the north coast towns well and almost nothing else.
What is the one thing not to miss?
If you only do one thing: Knossos plus the Heraklion museum in central Crete, Spinalonga in the east, or Chania old town in the west. Which one depends entirely on where you sleep.
Is Crete good for a first trip to Greece?
Yes. It has the archaeology, the beaches and the mountains in one place, an international airport at each end, and a road network you can drive without stress.
