Choose a region before choosing your airport

Chania suits a west-Crete base and outings towards Kissamos or Elafonissi. Heraklion is a practical starting point for Knossos, the central north coast and the east. Compare the actual flights available for your dates and the journey to your accommodation before committing; this guide does not assume future flight schedules.

One base or two?

Heraklion, Gouves, Analipsi or Hersonissos can anchor a central/eastern week. Chania or Rethymno can anchor a western week. Two bases can reduce repeated long journeys, but add packing and hotel changes. With children, a single base and shorter day trips may be the calmer choice.

A realistic seven-day example from the Heraklion area

This is a menu of days, not a timed tour. Adjust it to where you sleep and what is open; do not combine distant west-coast and east-coast stops on your departure day.

• Day 1: arrive, settle into your accommodation and take a short local walk.
• Day 2: Heraklion and either Knossos or the Archaeological Museum; check opening times.
• Day 3: a local beach day around your accommodation, weather permitting.
• Day 4: Archanes and a village lunch, with time for the return journey.
• Day 5: choose Agios Nikolaos, or a separate outing around Elounda; confirm boat services if visiting Spinalonga.
• Day 6: an unhurried local day, or a Rethymno outing if the drive suits your group.
• Day 7: return the car at the agreed point and leave sufficient time for your flight.

When a rental car helps — and when it does not

A car is useful for village visits and several independent stops. For a walkable town stay with limited excursions, check buses and organised trips first. Choose a car using passenger count and luggage space, not just the daily guide price. Stay on paved roads; the Balos gravel track is not allowed with our rentals.

Planning with children

Keep room for meal stops and rest days. Ask your accommodation about parking, walking distances and child facilities. Child seats cost a small extra fee; include each child's age in your rental enquiry. An additional driver costs €4 per day and must be named in the agreement.

Ask about a 2027 rental without assuming availability

Send your dates, airport or hotel and preferred transmission. I will check what can be arranged and confirm the price and conditions separately. Sending an enquiry does not reserve a vehicle or confirm a booking. The existing airport minimum is three days at Heraklion and four days at Chania.
