Crete in April and May: A Practical Spring Travel Guide

Spring can suit walking and sightseeing, but April and May do not guarantee beach weather or every seasonal service. Treat the following as planning context, not a forecast for your travel dates.

Allow for changeable conditions

Greece's national tourism portal describes spring as changeable. Pack layers and a rain jacket, and check a current forecast before a mountain walk or long drive. Sea conditions and swimming comfort depend on the day and the individual; do not plan around guaranteed swimming weather.

Choose flexible activities

Town walks in Heraklion, Rethymno or Chania, a village visit and a museum day can make a flexible itinerary. Check each museum, archaeological site and restaurant directly; a summer listing is not proof of spring opening.

Do not assume Samaria is open

Visit Greece describes Samaria's usual season as May to the end of October, subject to weather. That is not a guarantee for a particular day in 2027. Confirm opening and trail conditions with the park before travelling and check the return bus and ferry arrangements.

Plan driving and transport together

Use paved roads and allow time for bends, weather and stops. Never follow a map shortcut onto gravel: off-asphalt driving invalidates our rental cover. Check dated bus timetables and boat operations rather than assuming summer frequencies.

What to confirm before leaving

Confirm accommodation access and parking, attraction openings, transport, the forecast and the rental quote. I can check your proposed rental dates, but an enquiry does not establish availability. For airport pickup, agree the meeting point, return instructions and any night surcharge in advance.
