Car Rental in Crete: Deposits, Insurance and Credit Cards

A low deposit and a low excess describe different things. Read the agreement and exclusions, not just a headline promising full insurance.

Deposit, card hold and excess are different

A deposit is security held against possible charges. A card pre-authorisation reserves available funds without being an ordinary payment. Excess is the amount you may owe for an insured claim. Zero excess does not erase exclusions or responsibility for breaches.

What MyCrete currently offers

The current terms include FCDW and WUG with €0 excess for covered damage and no deposit or excess card pre-authorisation. FCDW includes theft and fire; WUG adds tyres, undercarriage, glass and mirrors. Personal belongings are not insured. Always read the current terms supplied with your quote.

Exclusions matter

Cover does not apply to off-asphalt driving, unregistered drivers or driving under alcohol or drugs. Interior damage is excluded unless caused in an accident. Reckless use, wind-blown doors, clutch or gearbox abuse and other specified breaches can leave you liable. Report an accident immediately; do not wait until return. Ferry travel needs advance approval and different insurance.

Cards, cash and documents

Pay at handover by card, bank transfer or cash in euros; no prepayment is required under the current terms. Each driver must show an original valid physical driving licence and ID or passport. Copies and phone photos are not accepted. With a non-EU/EEA licence, check whether an International Driving Permit is required for your issuing country.

Extras, fuel and handover charges

Additional drivers cost €4 per day and must be named in the agreement. Child seats cost a small extra fee. Return with the same fuel level. The terms list charges for missing fuel; check the current fuel section. Handovers between 23:30 and 07:00 may have a surcharge disclosed in the quote. Review your pickup location, dates and full total before confirming.
