Choosing your Crete base

Where to Stay in Crete and When You Need a Rental Car

The right base depends on your days, not just your hotel. Compare the places you want to visit, the journeys involved and what you can do locally without a car.

Chania: old-town stays and western outings

Chania suits travellers who want harbour walks and a western base. For an old-town stay, walking can be simpler than keeping a car at the door; ask the hotel about parking. A car helps with independent west-coast trips, but Balos must be reached without taking our rental onto the gravel track.

Rethymno: town days and countryside

Rethymno combines an old-town stay with access to the wider countryside. Walk for town days and compare buses with a rental for outings towards villages or the south coast. Mountain routes take time; do not plan them as quick detours.

Heraklion: city sightseeing and central Crete

Heraklion can suit museum visits and a city-focused stay. A car is less useful for walking around the centre and more useful for a multi-stop outing towards central villages. Compare current transport to Knossos with parking and your wider itinerary.

Gouves, Analipsi and Hersonissos: a coastal base

These areas offer coastal accommodation options for a beach-focused week. Check your hotel's actual distance to beaches, shops and bus stops; an area name does not establish walking access. Rent for selected outing days if that suits better than a whole-week rental.

Agios Nikolaos and Elounda: eastern plans

Consider these for an east-Crete base and outings around the bay. For Spinalonga, confirm boat arrangements separately. Ask about hotel access, transport and delivery arrangements before deciding on a rental; do not assume every remote accommodation has the same service conditions.

Decide how many car days you need

List walkable local days, days covered by confirmed buses or excursions and independent multi-stop days. Compare those needs with the rental quote and airport minimum. I can help check a vehicle for your plans; an enquiry is not confirmation of availability or a booking.

FAQ

Does every Crete holiday need a rental car?

No. A walkable town stay can work without one. A car is more useful for independent village and multi-stop outings; check actual transport options.
