A loaded seven-seater climbs slowly and is wider than it feels in village lanes, so prefer the national road for long transfers and park outside old towns. Heraklion airport to Rethymno takes around an hour and fifteen minutes, to Agios Nikolaos an hour, to Chania about two hours. In summer, book a seven-seater as early as you can - there are far fewer of them on the island than compact cars.
