The access road down into the bay is narrow and steep in places; we know it and hand the car over at your hotel entrance rather than somewhere you then have to walk from.
Everything outside the bay involves the climb back up to the national road, so buses are infrequent and taxis add up quickly. With a car, Heraklion is 20 minutes east and Rethymno 50 minutes west. If you are staying on the hillside, a small automatic is the comfortable choice for the gradient and the tight turns.
