The town itself is compact and the harbour ring is one-way - use the car parks above the lake rather than circling. The national road west towards Heraklion is fast; everything east and south is slower, narrower and much more scenic. Allow 45 minutes to Sitia even though the map suggests less, and fill the tank before heading into the Thripti or Katharo mountains, where stations are scarce.
