The road from Agios Nikolaos to Elounda hugs the cliff with genuinely spectacular views - beautiful, but not a road to hurry on, especially after dark when it is unlit. North of Plaka the surface narrows and switchbacks up towards Vrouhas; a small car handles it fine, taken slowly. Parking in Plaka is limited in high season, so arrive before the morning boats or after 17:00.
