The national road runs right past Rethymno, so both airports are an easy drive: Chania 45 minutes, Heraklion just over an hour. In town, park along the seafront or in the paid car parks near the Venetian fortress - the old town's lanes are as tight as Chania's. Heading south into the Amari valley the asphalt stays decent but the corners tighten and the villages have no fuel, so fill up before you leave the coast.
