A deposit is the part of car rental nobody enjoys. At an airport desk in Crete you can expect €500 to €1500 held on a credit card in the main driver's name - money you cannot spend on your holiday, released days or weeks after you fly home.
We do it differently. There is no deposit, no card block and no card details held. You agree the price, we hand over the car, and the insurance that is already included does the job the deposit is supposed to do.
A deposit exists to cover the excess on a basic insurance policy - the first €700 to €1200 of any damage. Their counter staff are then paid to sell you a waiver that removes it. We skipped that whole business model: every car is rented with full cover at zero excess as standard, so there is no excess to secure and nothing to upsell. It is a smaller, slower way to run a rental company, and it only works because we are local and the fleet is ours.
