The old town is effectively closed to visiting cars. Use the paid car parks around the edge - by the Talos square, near the market, or along the Nea Chora seafront - and walk the last few minutes. Blue lines are paid street parking with a machine, white lines are free but rare in summer, and yellow means you will be fined. Many small hotels have no parking at all, so ask before you assume; if there is none, we can suggest the nearest secure car park when we deliver.
Why a car matters here more than in Heraklion
The best beaches in the west - Falassarna, Elafonissi, Kedrodasos - have poor or seasonal bus links.
The mountain villages of Apokoronas and the Therisso gorge are a 30-minute drive and unreachable otherwise.

Which car suits Chania
Small city car - the sane choice if you are staying in or near the old town.
SUV - better for the long mountain runs south to Sfakia and Elafonissi.
Automatic - the coast road is easy, but the hairpins above Therisso are not.
Seven-seater - possible for groups, but not for the old town's lanes.

Is delivery to a Chania hotel free?
Yes, anywhere in the Chania area, including Nea Chora, Agia Marina and Platanias. We bring the car when you want it and collect it when you leave.
Should I rent a car for the whole stay in Chania?
If you are in the old town, many guests take the car only for the days they explore. Tell us your plan and we will price both options honestly.
Where do I park overnight in Chania?
In one of the paid car parks at the edge of the old town, or in your accommodation's parking if it has any. Street parking inside the old town is not realistic in summer.
How long is the drive from Chania to Heraklion?
Around 2h15 on the national road. It is a straightforward drive, but it is not a day trip - stay overnight if you want to see Knossos properly.
