Leaving CHQ you climb across Akrotiri and drop down towards Souda bay - about 20 minutes to Chania old town, 25 to the Nea Chora seafront, 35 to Platanias. The airport road is wide and easy, but the last kilometre into the old town is not: it is a maze of one-way lanes where cars are not welcome. Park at the Talos or old-harbour car parks and walk in. Heading west, the coastal road to Kissamos is quick; heading south to Sfakia or Elafonissi you are on mountain roads and should double whatever the map says.
