When an SUV is genuinely worth it

• Mountain villages and the south coast, where roads are steep, narrow and sometimes patchy.
• Four adults plus luggage - a small car's boot runs out before the passengers do.
• Long transfer days between the west and east of the island.
• Rough hotel access roads, common around villas inland.
• Winter and spring trips, when mountain roads are wet and slower.

When a smaller car is the better choice

In Chania and Rethymno old towns, in Hersonissos in August, and anywhere you have to park on a village street, a compact car is easier and cheaper to run. If your week is beaches, tavernas and one or two big drives, a Clio or Corsa does the job. We will say so when you ask for a quote rather than upsell you a bigger car.

Off-road is not covered - by anyone

Insurance in Greece is void off sealed roads, and that includes the gravel track to Balos and the dirt roads on the Gramvousa peninsula. This is true for every rental company on the island, 4x4 or not. Reach Balos by boat from Kissamos instead, and treat the SUV as a comfortable road car with more clearance.

Insurance and conditions

Every MyCrete car comes with FCDW full insurance plus WUG cover - tyres, the car's underside, glass and mirrors - at €0 excess. There is no upsell at handover, because there is no better package to sell you. We send the fuel policy, driver age rule and the full terms in writing before you confirm anything. An EU driving licence is enough. Insurance is void off-road, including the gravel track to Balos.
