When an SUV is the right choice
Choose an SUV if you are four adults with luggage, if you plan mountain routes and long driving days, or if you simply prefer a higher seating position on unfamiliar roads. If your trip is mostly coastal and you park in resort towns, a premium compact is often easier and cheaper to live with - we will say so rather than upsell you.
Honest note on models and off-road use
We show example models. The exact car is confirmed with availability, and where a model cannot be guaranteed we describe it as 'example model or similar'. No SUV we rent is insured off-road: the cover ends where the asphalt does, including the gravel track to Balos and unsurfaced mountain tracks.
What is not included
Cover is not unlimited and we would rather say so before you book than at handover. Fuel is not included: you receive the car with a set fuel level and return it the same way. Can I take an SUV on gravel roads?
Insurance is void off-road, so we ask you to stay on surfaced roads. We are happy to suggest which viewpoints and beaches are reachable that way.
Is a 4x4 necessary in Crete?
For almost every route travellers actually drive, no. Ground clearance and comfort matter far more than four-wheel drive.
